XOB =) boxes of the world unite

Our Group Name: XOB

Team Members: from left(Supei,Shine,HuiXin(myself)
Location?: Canteen A( near ATM machine)
When?: 8 October,2010 ,Friday
Time?: 12.30-1.30pm

For our group, we came out with this idea of using 'boxes' to be our theme.
Supei's box is white, Shine's box is red and for myself, is a transparent box. This is an assignment is about performance as action in a public space whereby a performance of a 'happening' kind involving members of the public, looking and involving in some way.

Pre-Performance:
Materials I have used: Clear Jar, 4 colour of sands

Some people might think that sand craft might be a childplay game. Children create the sand art using their own creativity to make it into a beautiful artpiece. It requires lots of time and patience to do it. To set thinking, how many adults or youngsters are willing to slow down their pace and use their precious time to create the artwork? Therefore, i've come up with this performance art so as to let the public to come forward to particpate in the work process. Time spent on each person were just less than a minute. With the accumulated creativity and time of the public a beautiful workpiece was produced.

The Performance Process:

Preparation Work

The First Public to come forward to start the flow...

Below are some of the photos taken during the 'happening'

My idea is to let the public to lay the coloured sand into the 'box' to create colourful and artistic designs. It is special because it is one of a kind and it signifies unity when we come together to create this special art design. I wanted to involve the public because I find that different people have different ideas of how they want to place the coloured sand and which combination of sand colour will create a better effect. This will further enhance the creativity of the coloured sand as different coloured layers of sand is placed by different people. Some of them just grab a handful of sand and throw it into the jar. Some took up the whole bag and pour into the desired amount they want. Some were trying to use different colour to come up with their own design. Lastly, these are some of the feedback gathered from the public :

  • The pouring of sand signifies the ability to embrace diversity and difference.  -Leon
  • Pouring the sand makes me part of the creating a beautiful artworks.  -Karu
  • Pouring the sand releases a smoothing sensation in me. -Unknown

Lastly, here's the completed sand glass

After revealing the final artpiece.. how do you feel when you pour the amount of sand u had into the jar? What do you think of the artpiece? Feel free to drop in a comment..

My thoughts:
Unity brings out a good work. Each and everyone plays a part, even if that small little effort you have contributed, it helps to complete the work.
